One of the first things we did was write down our thoughts about technology. Then after doing some ice-breaker activities, we found a different table and summarized key words. The instructor typed all the key words into Wordle (the more times a word is put into Wordle, the larger the word becomes). Then as a group we shared ideas on how Wordle is used in class:
Have students write I believe....
Brainstorm characteristics of a novel
Type in vocabulary words..then on SmartBoard have students circle words while giving a definition or sentence
Another had students copy and paste a paragraph into Wordle to see what words are used to much...great Word Choice activity.

I liked using this to organize. It was useful to see what traits stood out as we thought about technology.

Another possible use for wordle, pointed out by another participant, is to search for relavancy[?] If you have electronic materials, you can download to wordle, then use it to see if important terms appear as frequently as you would like.
ReplyDeleteTo keep phrases together, use a tilde to separate words instead of a space.
I'm a little confused. Is this to be used a search engine? At first I was hoping to use it as a vocabulary building tool, but I can't see it working for that either.
ReplyDeleteI noticed when I type in a search topic, I tend to generate several advertising suggestion sites like amazon & credit reports.
Am I using this correctly?
No, I don't think so. Try going to wordle.net
ReplyDeleteIt should let you type in words. Then you create a cluster of the words. I use it for vocabulary review, but it has applications for brainstorming, too.
I went to wordle.net - pretty awesome and simple to use! I just typed in some words, changed the font and color. I bet there is more you can do with it - so when you get a chance, I'd like more information. Our middle school is really focusing on vocabulary in all subjects and I think they'd really like this site.
ReplyDeleteI went to wordle.net and found it easy to add words. I was wondering if you can continue to add words once it is created or if you have to start all over again. I had created one about frogs for our lesson next week but could see how to add to it so I didn't save it.
ReplyDeleteI had looked at wordle once or twice and wondered how it might apply in the classroom. The expercise you described got me thinking about lots of other application that would work with students. Great way to summarize a discussion or create a graphic representation of character traits.
ReplyDeleteAha!! I was at Wordle.COM, not .NET
ReplyDeleteThe simple things....
I use WORDLE every week with my students. They love making the different word clouds wit their weekly vocabulary. Sometimes they won't print with FireFox and you have to switch to Safari.

I really like wordle for the nice visual effect.
ReplyDeleteI have not been able to use Wordle on my student computers. There are other websites like Kerpoof that I also cannot load. We seem to have a lot of sites that we cannot load at our school. It could be a CyberSitter block, but it is frustrating trying to use Web 2.0 tools with a bunch of students when our Internet accessibility is limited at times.
