Stretch to Music
Brain research shows that the brain needs a balanced of focused attention and nonfocused down time. One strategy that we used today was to get up and move to music. It's fun and refreshing. Learning occurs in chunks. Jennifer shared that for adults the appropripate length of time for a chunk is 20 minutes. For children it's their age minus 2 or 3. At fourth grade that would be about 7 minutes max! She had a great song for this. I think it's called "Brainbreak". I'm going to search itunes for that.

Looking forward to the song.
ReplyDeleteInteresting, the appropriate length of time for chunks. I certainly need to work on providing brain breaks!! Thanks for sharing and I look forward to hearing the song too!
ReplyDeleteI do S'Cool Moves every day (that is exercise to music) and our gym teacher does Morning Moves for the whole school two mornings a week. We work on developing our core muscles also. I will look for the site I have used for brain breaks. Being a former p.e. teacher who has moved into the classroom, I really like to add activity.

ReplyDeleteThis has clips to show you how to do the brain breaks.
Thanks for the web-site! I briefly checked it out. I can't wait to try some out tomorrow. Looking forward to a Monday, scary I know!
ReplyDeleteBrain base studies in math show that if a topic is introduced using about 10-15 minutes of instruction with about 5-10 minutes of practice, and then repeat the process with the next topic with a small 1-2 minute break between, students are able to focus more and retain the information more. I have been trying that with my classes this year, and boy it sure works!
ReplyDeleteWe just attended a training on Quantum Learning and music was incorporated into everything. It really motivated students of all ages. I am trying to use it more in the classroom.
